AFI Series Comics were published by the New World Publications situated in former Bombay (Now known as Mumbai). They were operational during early 70’s in the year 1973-1975. They were the first publication to print Rip Kirby and Phil Corrigan long before they were introduced in the mighty Indrajal Comics.
The AFI comics featured four characters (Click on the character names to visit the respective Wikipedia pages) –
- Private Detective Rip Kirby
- Secret Agent Phil Corrigan
- Wild West Hero Cisco Kid
- Interpol’s Johnny Hazard
The comic books were very small in size. The AFI comics were printed in the size of 4 inches by 6 inches. All the published issues were in Black and White with only the covers in colour.
The AFI comics were only published in English and
not in any other language in my knowledge. The first issue was numbered as 101
and had Phil Corrigan story – Dr. Seven of TRIAD. The total number of issues
are not conformed but the last I have come across is again a Phil Corrigan
issue numbered 132 – The Eyes of Kushna.
So, there were atleast 32 issues printed (may be more but not sure till
now). The price of each issue was 1.75 Rupees which remained the same
throughout the AFI life.
The inconsistency in the printing of the comics
finally led the series to end sooner than the publishers had hoped for (around
1974-75). The comparatively higher price, small size and no-colour approach
killed the dream of a long run. The characters were also not much famous or
known to Indian comic readers. The publisher never tried to go beyond these
lesser known characters. Rip Kirby and Phil Corrigan were later made popular by
the Indrajal Comics but that is another story. The Indrajal Comics were big in
size and were fully coloured which attracted the Indian comics reader more to
them. The Times of India was the major reason for the growth, popularity and
wide circulation of the Indrajal comics.
